Planning
When I heard about this project I had an idea of what I wanted to do. I started to sketched them out, for this project I wanted to give a really big meaning of myself towards the audience. I wanted to incorporate my past, the future, and who I am. However, I asked Mr. Chad for some help with bringing up ideas for the project, when I felt stuck. Later, at the end I changed my sketches all over again incorporating symbolism not to obvious for the audience to decode what I'm trying to display. Process 1. Gather Materials of creating canvases (1ft.x2ft.) 2. Stretch Canvases and Gesso each one of them 3. Paint the background of desired color 4.Display or draw the image into the canvas 5. Start painting, the drawing (or image) 6. Add details to the drawing to create more realistic features Meaning behind the piece In the first panel of the triptych piece I drew two portraits of myself. The reason why is that once you get to know me I'm a very open and outgoing person, I like to smile and laugh a lot. Also I drew myself as a serious person behind the cheerful image because I'm also a quiet and shy person. The second panel is an image of a child's room ripping itself because I wanted to display a message of how once you leave your childhood period or once you grow as a young adult the things around you change. The time seems unnocountable, thre's more responsibilities to take care, a lot of work, study and work hard to reach your goals. The last panel is an image of myself with a beak of an eagle and cherry blossoms in the background. The image of myself with the beak represents how I manage to overcome my obstacles in life and grow even stronger and with more confidence about myself. You may know that eagles change their beaks once it's time that's how I wanted this meaning to have a connection about how I change as a person and who I am in different situations. Artistic Inspiration My inspirations for this piece were mainly inspired by the surrealism movement, and artist Salvador Dali. In the first panels of the piece were mainly inspired by the famous piece of Dali "Persistence of Memory". Although, I changed the effects on both of my panels. I wanted to give a try of creating that dripping effect in my self portrait panel and the ripping effect in my second panel. In the third panel I really wanted to give a different effect. I was inspired by Frida Kahlo's painting "The Wounded Deer", I really love how she incorporated herself as the deer. This piece has a really big meaning towards Diego's love how much he has damaged her. However, I managed to work with the same idea of Kahlo incorporating myself as an eagle, in this case the beak of the eagle. Reflection Overall, I really loved doing this project and my overall work. The difficulties that I had during the process was creating the dripping effect with the paint on the first panel of the piece. I was having a hard time getting the paint to slide on the canvas, what I managed to do was put warm water on a clean spray bottle and sprayed water on the base of the self portrait drawings. Also, I was struggling in creating that ombre effect background on the second panel, what I had to do is first paint the first color on top of the canvas and then add the other colors and smooth them all out. In the third panel I was having a hard time in adding little details in the cherry blossoms and getting the right skin tone color. However, I learned from my mistakes and I would know what to do in the future with a project similar like this. |
