Title: Self portrait
Medium: Acrylic on canvas Size: 12cmx 12cm September 16, 2016 The artist wanted to challenge herself and be able to try new mediums and techniques. She was inspired by Chuck Close's artwork the use of colors, and the use of the grid method, in order to achieve this pixel-ed like look. She was also inspired by Kate Williams Brusubardis painting "Foliage particulates 2 pathway", the use of cool and warm colors in her painting recreating the shadows and light in her art work. The artist recreated this art work with a mixture of techniques by a local artist and a national artist. |
Planning
Inspiration For this piece I managed to challenge myself, and push myself in doing something different than what I usually do; in technique and the use of colors. I decided to utilize Chuck Close's technique and was inspired by his artwork. The use of colors is very important for me, because it gives mood and life to the painting. I was inspired by Chuck Close's artwork and technique. The use of his grid method, and colors to really bring out the intended figure he want's to display to the audience. Chuck Close uses the grid method and creates giant portrait canvases because it helps him remember and distinguish faces. He suffers from prosopagnosia (face blindness) and this condition is what inspired him to do portraits. Although I was inspired by Chuck Close's artwork I really find Kate Williams Brusubardis Artwork very amazing. Instead of using regular tones for the specific object she manipulates the hues to give out that cold and warm feeling in her painting. I visited a gallery when one of her artworks was displayed and really caught my eye. "Foliage particulates 2 pathway" is the title of her paiting that is eye catching for the audience. Meaning behind the piece The main concept in recreating the same tecnhiques as Chuck Close and Karen Williams in their artwork, because we have to recreate a painting that we're going to talk about in our comparative study and so it was the main reason why I aimed to do Chuck Close and Karen Williams technique. Also, I wanted to try out a different technique, and use different color tones. Experimentation and sketches It was my first time working with the grid technique and of course I experimented first, to see how it was going to turn out. I also, sketched some ideas I wanted to portray myself in this piece as a joyful or moody feeling. I did a variety of sketches that I wanted to portray different moods, however I chose which kind of mood I wanted to portray in my art piece. |

Process
The overall process was time consuming to achieve the final product, however it was an accomplishment that I achieved to make. 1. First create sketches of what position you would like to portray in the piece, and what figure would really stand out with the contrasting colors. Create a series of sketches and what mood you would like to portray using the tones of colors, this will really help set the mood of the piece. 3. Then when you're done with stretching and gesso-ing the canvas, you can first start displaying the image on the canvas, and later do lines across the canvas creating the grid method with a ruler. Make sure the lines are evenly spaced out and are the same measurements.
4. Then I started to paint the illustration with cool colors the hair and skin and then I proceed to paint the background with warm colors. I wanted to do the mixture of techniques from the local and national artist in one, using the grid technique and using the cool and warm colors in the painting.

2. After figuring out what colors and sketch of position you would like to display in your piece start stretching your canvas and gesso it. When adding gesso to the canvas make sure to cover the front and sides of canvas very quickly to prevent from drying and making your canvas warp. We don't want that, because it will snap and break, it will also be very difficult when displaying your work to the audience, and while painting.

Reflection
Overrall this piece was time consuming in painting each individual square in the canvas. It was challenging for me in getting a light and dark tone for the skin and detailing the face features. The background was the easiest part in making this piece, however I struggled in detailing the hair, teeth, glasses and the features of the face. I learned how to mix and match the different hues using both Chuck's and Kate's technique in my painting. I really enjoy doing this painting it was fun using different tones of colors in my self portrait
ACT Questions
The relationship between my inspirations and my artwork they are similar in technique and the use of colors. I tried to remake the similar technique from the local and national artist both in one. My point fo view this specific piece shows my cheerful and my anxiety. I sometimes have my ups and downs especially dealing with anxiety and it' s really hard to not overthink the situations. I find it interesting that Karen Williams uses her technique as a way of how she remembers her sceneries during her childhood, and Chuck Close paints portraits as way to recognize peoples faces, because he suffers from facial blindness and its a way for him to recognize facial features.
