Title: "Blinded"
Medium: Acrylic on canvas Size: October 7, 2016 The artist portrayed the feeling she would feel during her childhood and ever since today. The emotion fear is a strong emotion that makes us vulnerable, or alert at the same time; however it's an emotion that makes us go blind from reality and makes us do things when were not in our right state of minds. |
Planning
Inspiration I wanted to do something different for this project something dark and filled with suspense. I wanted to portray myself with the feeling I've been having since little and today. This specific piece is going to be filled with emotion for the artist and also for the viewers. I was inspired by the movement surrealism as a whole. Especially, by dark surrealism for this piece. The type of dream and unreal like, is my goal to portray in my piece. I was really captivated by the use of shadows in dark surrealism, that fills the artwork with suspenses. Another thing that I noticed is that almost throughout the dark surreaslism artworks is mainly in Black and White; and if there is use of color, they use soft tones or either very dark colors, depends on the artist to give light into their artwork. However, in my piece I want to give a very suspenseful mood. Meaning behind the piece Fear is a strong feeling that awakes all of our senses. It also makes us not think clearly, because we're so focused on the threat and we do not make the right decisions while we're being scared. It blinds us from reality and it doesn't let us think straight, and we make the impossible actions into possible. I say this because when I was a little girl my phobia would be the dark, thunder, and hairy insects; and there was one night that I was in my room and it was pouring outside, then there was big thunder clap that made the lights go out and I don't how what happen but the next thing I know was that I felt a rush of adrenaline within me and I screamed with horror and jumped in my bed and covered myself with the blankets and shut my eyes off and was silently crying of fear. I couldn't move I was terrified I would only remain still, and I would hear my heart thumping loudly in my chest and I was also hearing my surroundings. Experimentation and Planning
I wans't sure what kind of background I wanted for this piece I was either thinking of a pitch black with dark blue background or an ombre effect with 3-4 colors. I started out to experiment the colors in my sketchbook to see the results of which one, was the one I was aiming for. Also I sketched my drawings to depict towards the word fear. Process
1. To start off I bought a canvas in Walmart and then I did the background first, with the colors that I experimented in my sketchbook (colors: Black, yellow and white) |
2. Then I splattered black paint with the help from a paint brush and a toothbrush with the bristles I would pack them with the black paint and then I would flick them on the canvas. Later, I would draw the figure of the sketch that I chose in the canvas, and started painting.

Reflection
Overall I enjoyed doing this piece, because it was a more personal based painting and in my opinion I think I portrayed how fear really is and how it affects us. Fear is a feeling that makes us be alert, and act on our actions, but also it blinds us and it does not let us think straight. The background and sketching the illustration in the canvas it was easy to make however, I was having problems as always in blending the shadows of the skin tone and clothing. I managed to succesfully blend it by addidn a darker tone to the skin color and apply it where I desire it to be and with a little brush I dabbed it in water and slowly I would blend the two tones of skin colors together making a smooth finish. This was also another technique that I used for the skull and clothing, which I really liked how it turned out to be in the final piece.
ACT Questions
The connection between my artwork and my inspirations is that they both have that same dark, suspenceful mood. The overall approach was to give that same suspence feeling towards the audience the same way as dark surrealism does. Everyone has experienced fear before whether big or small but either way it awakes all of our senses and it may block us from thinking straight and I just wanted recreate an event(s) that I have lived and give out a more personal artwork towards the audience.
