Title: Battle of two wolves
Medium: Photoshop (Digital Manipulation) Size: 61x 91cm. In this artwork the artist wanted to show the life decisions and wisdom throughout this art piece. She was inspired by the Native Americans beliefs. The Native Americans are very spiritual, sacred people and are deeply rooted in their culture. Every Time they had an experienced they believed that all things happened for a purpose. Cherokee Proverb said “ There is a battle of two wolves inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, lies, inferiority and ego. The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy and truth. The wolf that wins? Is the one you feed.” Planning This was my first time working with a program that lets you manipulate photos. At first, I was having trouble brainstorming ideas for this project. I wanted to be able to display a meaning, or be able to display my past and who I am. One day when I was on social media I came across with a quote that I immediately fell in love and I wanted either to work with it and be able to display it in any form in visual arts. Then I started creating my planning sketches. I had to create at least three planning sketches for what I'd like to design later on for this project. Process 1. First I began by drawing the howling wolf, which it took me three days maximum to complete it. 2.Later on I scanned it and saved it on my flash drive. 3. Then I took a picture of how I was going to portray myself in this piece. 4. Then, fixed the lightning using Photoshop and cropped out the excess on the picture I didn't want to show on the piece. 5. Next I began uploading the pictures in Photoshop and put the pictures in order and overlaying them. 6. I began to make the drawing of the howling wolf translucent over my face. 7. At last I took a picture of the beach and change it into B&W and uploaded to the final piece. Artistic Inspiration My inspiration of this piece was mainly Surrealism movement, and the artist Salvador Dali. I chose Surrealism, because is based of irrational images, and gives creative potential unconscious mind. I really wanted to give the message of this quote in a surreal way of having two wolves inside us very unreal but very wise. Surrealism does a connection to this piece, because it has the connection of beliefs and culture. I found my inspiration in his artwork from "Automatic beginning of a Portrait of Gala", I wanted to do something with the same pose as this piece and incorporated into my digital collage. I also, incorporated some details from his other artwork pieces such as the background from "Figure at the Window" and incorporate an animal into my piece from his artwork "Portrait of Gala with a lobster". Then I wanted to make a soft hue color of the piece just as his artwork from "Figure at the Window". Meaning Behind the Piece The meaning behind my piece is based of the beliefs and wisdom of the Native Americans. Native Americans were spiritual people and they respected every living thing and mother earth. Native Americans respected elderly people, because they knew more about life and had more experiences in their lifetime. Inside us all there's a battle between two wolves is a constant struggle as to which one will win, and they cannot exist without the other. In life there's a war between evil vs. good, in this case we also have a war inside us all, because we have to chose which path we are willing to take. We are responsible for our own actions and decisions, and due to these acts we later have to live with the consequences of our choices. Reflection Overall this piece was really fun to make, I learn how to utilize the supplies in Photoshop and also how to utilize the program. Also, I had some difficulties while doing this piece. I was having trouble in making the picture transparent and overlaying them to one another. I also had trouble in brainstorming ideas in order to start out with this project. What I really found the most easy in this project was drawing out the howling wolf, and putting the pictures in order of how it was going to show in the last piece. One of my mistakes were uploading a picture into Photoshop and I always kept forgetting in cropping out the picture and then overlay the pictures to one another. The biggest annoying thing of this project was when Photoshop didn't cooperate in doing the things I wanted the program to do, and it would take it's own pace that one day it didn't saved my work and I had to restart again. |
