Planning
Inspiration One day as I was scrolling down on my Instagram feed I came through a video which they create paintings, starting off by painting in their palm of their hands the desired figure and then stamped on a canvas or a paper, which was really astonishing. Many questions surged around my brain for example "How can the paint not dry out? Do they pack it with a lot of layers? What happens if the figure when you transfer it, results being very light, that you can barely see it?" so many questions were happening. But it really looked cool to give it a try. I was inspired by a page in Instagram called Pangean Studios, you guys should go check it out, the paintings are really cool to watch; and his technique basically is just transferring the painting image from the hand to the canvas or paper, is looks simple but we may not know how it may result, so I thought to give it a try. I was also inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night painting, the technique in Van Gogh's art piece is long and soft with the use of soft lines and soft hues. It also appears to be a sort of a dream distortion image that also had a great impact on my artwork in making it a dream effect. Meaning behind the piece The use of technique in Van Gogh's painting Starry Night, it appears to be like a dream distortion of reality. Which is really beautiful and eye catching. It also gives a sense of movement and so do dreams. This piece and my art work have a feeling of peace and calmness, which gives a feeling of relaxation. Everybody have dreamed before during their sleep, and that's normal because it's our brain that is functioning during our sleep. Personally, I visual my dreams as a distortion of reality, because is something that is happenning in our minds and our dreams it's using our imagination. So I wanted to illustrate of how I visual my imagination during my sleep. Experimentation and Planning I knew from the start that I wanted to incorporate Van Gogh's impressionism style into my piece. So I sketched out a few ideas of what I visualize my dreams and imagination during my sleep. |

Process
First I washed my hands and then I colored the background with two base colors such as purple and blue then I sprayed water into my hand with the paint in order to prevent the paint from drying out and theni added the other base color on top of the purple and added soft white lines to start out the outline of where I was going to do the climax in the imrpessionism lines. Finally, I outline the flower with black paint and added paint to the petals and stem and also gave it a little bit of technique of impressionism, and final touches I added stars to give out shine.
|
Then I started to add colors one by one doing the soft lines, tracing the outline that I did in the beginning with the white paint. I added first more soft strokes of white paint, then I layered blue soft strokes, then yellow and purple soft strokes and I kept adding more and more layers of soft lines creating that movement.
However, everytime when I painted I would spray a little bit of water into my palm and continue painting. I would avoid spraying a lot of water in my palm, in order to prevent the paint to run and get ruined. As I was finished painting I was ready to transfer it into my sketchbook, so I sprayed a little more water into my palm and I let it fry for a few seconds and I placed my hand firmly into the paper and pressed down and prayed for it to work. Unfortunately, the painting did not stamped into the paper and I was a little down about it. So the next thing I did was to take pictures of my fianl piece.

Reflection
Overall, I really enjoyed doing this piece, because it was my first time trying out impressionism and especially using my hand as a canvas and it really worked out well. However, my intention of using my hand at first was because I was going to stamp the painting I did on my palm to a paper, which it did not stamp at all and I was a little down, because I was so anxious to see the final result and also be able to see if I achieved in stamping my painting. Creating the soft lines in order to replicate the same technique as Van Gogh's painting was quite easy, I personally enjoyed it because it was a new movement and technique that I was using. Drawing the sunflower was no trouble at all, however, in painting the petals, it was a little challenging to add technique and the shade. Finally, to add a touch of a dream effect I added 'Stars' around the illustration which really gave that shine!
ACT Questions
The relationship between my inspirations and my art work is that I replicated the same technique as Van Gogh's in the Starry Night and also used soft tones for the 'dream effect'. Also, in doing my painting in a regular canvas I used my hand as a way to show that my dreams and imagination are a part of me. The overall approach was to aim and replicate Van Gogh's style and use of color in my piece. The central idea was to illustrate me personal vision of dreams and imagination towards the audience.
