Title: "Balance"
Medium: Graphite on paper (Google Slides) Size: 10.5cm X 7.5cm (for each card) For this particular artwork the artist wanted to do something different and unique. She wanted to challenge herself in making a continuous drawing(s), and eventually making a little flip book or a slideshow, imitating that same affect as animation. She wanted to do something simple, however with a cultural meaning behind it. |

Inspiration I was watching a movie with my little siblings on netflix one day, and the movie they chose to see was Kung fu Panda 3. I really love the movies, because it has very wise, and inspiring messages to the audience. I was inspired by the yin and yang to portray in my piece. I was also inspired by the cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender, the fishes of the water nation swimming circling each other; and that reminded me of the yin and yang. So I chose to put them together, hopefully it would come out as I planned. Meaning behind the piece I have made previous art pieces which I have introduced the theme of good vs. evil a balance in life and throughout the universe. I wanted to recreate this same idea but with a different medium, and challenge myself, which of course it was time consuming. In the movies such as Kung Fu Panda and Avatar: The Last Airbender they have the same idea of balance of good vs. evil and how they manage to balance it, which is impossible to eradicate evil from the world. In the Chinese culture the symbol 'Fish' is a symbol that means "unity and peace" which is really interesting to find that same concept in these two different movies with the Yin and Yang and the fishes circling each other the symbol of the water nation in Avatar: The Last Airbender. |

Experimentation and Planning
I didn't know how to start out my art piece so I made an outine of what I was aiming for. I wasn't sure to start out with the fishes already swimming towards each other or draw the 'water' as a ripling effect, but I thought in starting in drawing the fishes, swimming towards each other. I did a rough draft of my outlines of how I wanted to start out my animation without making mistakes further in the future. |
Process
1. First get print paper, and cut it making flashcards out of them, or simply just use flashcards. Also when cutting the paper make sure each card is the same size. Start out by labeling the cards by numbers or the alphabet in the back of your cards in order to record the transitions of each scene; and it's also a way to to prevent any confusion in the future, while drawing. Because when drawing repetetive scenes, it will be very difficult to keep in track for the drawings. |
2. Then, start out drawing the illustrations on each card you made and make slowly transitions while drawing. Such as the movement of the body of the fish, tails and fins. Finally add texture the scales to the fishes.

Reflection
This specific project was time consuming and very challenging in order to recreate the repetetive scenes making the effect of the fishes swimming towards each other. In my opinion this project was difficult to achieve but it was fun making it. The challenging part overrall for this project was drawing out the fishes repetively, in my opinion I thought it was going to be very hard to mount them into a powerpoint and make the slides go fast enough, in order for the images to appear as an actual animation.
ACT Questions
The connection between my artwork and my inspirations is that I took in both of the ideas and incorporated into my artwork making it into a slideshow. The overall approach is to convey the balance between good and evil in the world and the balance that the world and everyone have. The movies have a connection towards the Chinese Culture, because of the main idea that they talk about in their plots such as the 'Balance in the world'. The Yin and Yang it also appears in the disney movie Mulan, and it has a different meaning behind it; the balance of the yin and yang is the symbol for unity.
